There are these joints and muscles in your jaw known as the temporomandibular joints – TMJ. These joints and muscles allow you to open and close your mouth. Located on both sides of your head, these joints work when you chew, swallow, and speak.
TMJ disorders are common, but they are also very painful and very inconvenient due to the fact that they damage your ability to eat food and to speak. A disorder can be caused by injury, arthritis, dislocation, and stress that leads to teeth grinding.
At Carrollwood Smiles, we can perform a diagnostic procedure to see if you have a TMJ disorder and are in need of treatment. During your diagnosis check the joints and muscles of your jaw for tenderness, popping, clicking, and any sort of difficulty that occurs when moving the jaw.
More involved treatments – such as surgeries – are available, but to start you off we recommend a simple plan that involves eating softer foods, avoiding chewing gum, using heat packs to modify the pain, and practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation to control the tension in your jaw. In some more advanced cases, medication may be prescribed or a more intensive procedure to treat your TMJ disorder. However, those are in more extreme cases and it is very likely that your TMJ disorder is easily treatable with simple methods that you can apply on your own. Remember, at Carrollwood Smiles our goal is to help you in the best way we can!
