Root canals are funny things. They’re probably the most lambasted oral procedure, and one of the most unpopular. However, we at Carrollwood Smiles want to inform you of the benefits that such a procedure offers and why exactly a root canal is so important your oral health.
Within your teeth, there are blood vessels and nerves. This is referred to as the “pulp” of your tooth. All of this is underneath the white enamel that gives your teeth the shape and the color that they have.
The pulp can become infected due to a variety of reasons. Reasons such as deep decay or deformities in the tooth such as chips and what not. All of those things can lead to infection, and if the infection isn’t treated, then it can cause tremendous pain or lead to an abscess – a swollen area that overflows with pus.
A root canal serves one major purpose. To remove the infected pulp, in order to save the rest of that tooth. At Carrollwood Smiles, we remove the infected pulp and then we carefully clean and shape the interior of the space until we finish it off by filling it and sealing it up. Once this is completed, you will return to your general dentist who will place a crown over the tooth to protect it and to restore the functions of that tooth. Once the tooth has been restored, it continues to function just as a normal tooth would.
A root canal is an important procedure that can save your teeth and save you from a lot of pain that can occur due to oral damage. It may not always be the most enjoyable procedure, but it is an important one that must be considered if you are in a position where a root canal is a viable option for you.
